Florida Invaded by Burmese Pythons — Activity
Where are the Pythons?
The grid you have is 40 miles wide by 40 miles long. Everglade Headquarters is at the center (0, 0) of the grid. The numbers to the left and right of 0 represent miles west and east of Everglade Headquarters. Similarly, the numbers above and below 0 represent miles north and south of Headquarters.
Researchers captured pythons near Everglade Headquarters and attached transmitters to the pythons to track their movements. The researchers released the pythons a number of miles away from Headquarters.
The Burmese Python Tracking Information gives the coordinates of where each python was captured and released. The remaining coordinates track the python’s movement over a number of days. Plot the coordinates for each python.

How Big are the Pythons?
Compare each snake’s weight to length as a fraction. Use the weight as the numerator and the length as the denominator. Use a calculator to divide each fraction to a decimal.
Compute in mixed numbers the average weight and length for the pythons.

How Fast do Pythons Travel?
How Many Eggs do They Lay?
Follow the directions on your worksheet to:
- compute the average daily speed for your snake and compare the averages;
- compute average yearly food intake for your snakes; and
- compute successful reproduction rates for your snakes.
